Contextual Value-definiteness and the Kochen-Specker Paradox

چکیده
Compatibility between the realist tenants of value-definiteness and causality is called into question by several realism impossibility proofs in which their formal elements are shown to conflict. We review how this comes about in the Kochen-Specker and von Neumann proofs and point out a connection between their key assumptions: a constraint on realist causality via additivity in the latter proof, noncontextuality in the former. We conclude that valuedefiniteness and contextuality are indeed not mutually exclusive.

Quantum Cryptographic Security from Contextuality
Quantum mechanics is contextual, that is, the outcome of a measurement does depend on how that value is measured. This somewhat bizarre, non-classical feature is a consequence of the Kochen-Specker theorem, which asserts that there is no non-contextual hidden variable theory that reproduces quantum theory. Contextuality is a property of quantum systems with Hilbert spaces of d > 2, as it can be...
متن کاملA Kochen-Specker Theorem for Unsharp Spin 1 Observables
Unsharp spin observables are shown to arise from the fact that a residual uncertainty about the actual alignment of the measurement device remains. If the uncertainty is below a certain level, and if the distribution misalignments is covariant under rotations, a Kochen-Specker theorem for the unsharp spin observables follows: There are finite sets of directions such that not all the unsharp spi...
متن کاملTruth and Quantum Mechanics
The logic of a physical theory reflects the structure of the propositions referring to the behaviour of a physical system in the domain of the relevant theory. It is argued in relation to classical mechanics that the propositional structure of the theory allows truth-value assignment in conformity with the traditional conception of a correspondence theory of truth. Every proposition in classica...
متن کاملOn the Unpredictability of Individual Quantum Measurement Outcomes
We develop a general, non-probabilistic model of prediction which is suitable for assessing the (un)predictability of individual physical events. We use this model to provide, for the first time, a rigorous proof of the unpredictability of a class of individual quantum measurement outcomes, a well-known quantum attribute postulated or claimed for a long time. We prove that quantum indeterminism...
متن کاملNon-contextual chocolate ball versus value indefinite quantum cryptography
Some quantum cryptographic protocols can be implemented with specially prepared metaphorical chocolate balls representing local hidden variables, others protected by value indefiniteness cannot. This latter feature, which follows from Belland Kochen-Specker type arguments, is only present in systems with three or more mutually exclusive outcomes. Conversely, there exist local hidden variable mo...
